Serious and sometimes fatal dermatologic reactions including toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis have been reported with the use of carbamazepine. This risk across Asian populations is reported to be 10% higher. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), including Equetro® (carbamazepine) Extended-Release Capsules, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in patients taking these drugs for any indication. Patients treated with any AED for any indication should be monitored for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and/or any unusual changes in mood or behavior.
Equetro® contains carbamazepine. Please insure patient is not taking any other form of carbamazepine. The most frequently observed adverse reactions, particularly during the early phases of therapy, are dizziness, drowsiness, unsteadiness, nausea, and vomiting.
